In Chapter 13, Lolita, angry that the lake trip has been put off, does not want to go to church with Charlotte and stays at home instead. Lolita is left alone with Humbert, who is, as you can guess, highly elated that he is with her alone. The scene wherein Lolita and Humbert are sitting together and Lolita starts eating an apple is a Biblical reference. When Lolita eats the apple in front of Humbert’s eyes, this represents temptation—she is Eve, and Humbert is Adam. Lolita does not know the implications of eating the apple, and does not realize that she has doomed herself in Humbert's hands.
On a side note, in Chapter 14, the summer camp director’s name is Shirley Holmes. Could this be a possible reference to Sherlock Holmes?
